We All Confess the Holy Ghost

We all confess the Holy Ghost, Who sweet grace and comfort giveth

So the church throughout all Judea and Galilee and Samaria enjoyed peace, being built up; and going on in the fear of the Lord and in the comfort of the Holy Spirit, it continued to increase. Acts 9:31

Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies and God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our affliction so that we will be able to comfort those who are in any affliction with the comfort with which we ourselves are comforted by God. For just as the sufferings of Christ are ours in abundance, so also our comfort is abundant through Christ. II Corinthians 1:3-5

Now may our Lord Jesus Christ Himself and God our Father, who has loved us and given us eternal comfort and good hope by grace, comfort and strengthen your hearts in every good work and word. II Thessalonians 2:16-17

And with the Father and the Son in eternal glory liveth

Then God said, "Let Us make man in Our image, according to Our likeness; and let them rule over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the sky and over the cattle and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth." Genesis 1:26

Now to the King eternal, immortal, invisible, the only God, be honor and glory forever and ever. Amen. I Timothy 1:17

Who the Church, His own creation, keeps in unity of Spirit

Therefore I, the prisoner of the Lord, implore you to walk in a manner worthy of the calling with which you have been called, with all humility and gentleness, with patience, showing tolerance for one another in love, being diligent to preserve the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace. There is one body and one Spirit, just as also you were called in one hope of your calling; one Lord, one faith, one baptism, one God and Father of all who is over all and through all and in all. Ephesians 4:1-6

Only conduct yourselves in a manner worthy of the gospel of Christ, so that whether I come and see you or remain absent, I will hear of you that you are standing firm in one spirit, with one mind striving together for the faith of the gospel; in no way alarmed by your opponents--which is a sign of destruction for them, but of salvation for you, and that too, from God. Philippians 1:27-28

Therefore if there is any encouragement in Christ, if there is any consolation of love, if there is any fellowship of the Spirit, if any affection and compassion, make my joy complete by being of the same mind, maintaining the same love, united in spirit, intent on one purpose. Philippians 2:1-2

Here forgiveness and salvation daily come thro’ Jesus’ merit

Then He opened their minds to understand the Scriptures, and He said to them, "Thus it is written, that the Christ would suffer and rise again from the dead the third day, and that repentance for forgiveness of sins would be proclaimed in His name to all the nations, beginning from Jerusalem. Luke 24:45-48

Peter said to them, "Repent, and each of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins; and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit." Acts 2:38

"And there is salvation in no one else; for there is no other name under heaven that has been given among men by which we must be saved." Acts 4:12

"The God of our fathers raised up Jesus, whom you had put to death by hanging Him on a cross. He is the one whom God exalted to His right hand as a Prince and a Savior, to grant repentance to Israel, and forgiveness of sins. And we are witnesses of these things; and so is the Holy Spirit, whom God has given to those who obey Him."
Acts 5:30-32

For He rescued us from the domain of darkness, and transferred us to the kingdom of His beloved Son, in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins. Ephesians 1:13-14

All flesh shall rise, and we shall be in bliss with God eternally.

Jesus said to her, "Your brother will rise again." Martha said to Him, "I know that he will rise again in the resurrection on the last day." Jesus said to her, "I am the resurrection and the life; he who believes in Me will live even if he dies, and everyone who lives and believes in Me will never die. Do you believe this?" She said to Him, "Yes, Lord; I have believed that You are the Christ, the Son of God, even He who comes into the world." John 11:23-27

We All Believe in Jesus Christ

We all believe in Jesus Christ, His own Son, our Lord, possessing an equal Godhead, throne, and might, source of every grace and blessing.

"I and the Father are one." John 10:30

"If I do not do the works of My Father, do not believe Me; but if I do them, though you do not believe Me, believe the works, so that you may know and understand that the Father is in Me, and I in the Father."
John 10:37-38

Jesus said to him, "I am the way, and the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father but through Me. If you had known Me, you would have known My Father also; from now on you know Him, and have seen Him." Philip said to Him, "Lord, show us the Father, and it is enough for us." Jesus said to him, "Have I been so long with you, and yet you have not come to know Me, Philip? He who has seen Me has seen the Father; how can you say, 'Show us the Father'? Do you not believe that I am in the Father, and the Father is in Me? The words that I say to you I do not speak on My own initiative, but the Father abiding in Me does His works. Believe Me that I am in the Father and the Father is in Me; otherwise believe because of the works themselves." John 14:6-11

"I do not ask on behalf of these alone, but for those also who believe in Me through their word; that they may all be one; even as You, Father, are in Me and I in You, that they also may be in Us, so that the world may believe that You sent Me. The glory which You have given Me I have given to them, that they may be one, just as We are one; I in them and You in Me, that they may be perfected in unity, so that the world may know that You sent Me, and loved them, even as You have loved Me." John 17:20-23

For He rescued us from the domain of darkness, and transferred us to the kingdom of His beloved Son, in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins. He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation. For by Him all things were created, both in the heavens and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities--all things have been created through Him and for Him. He is before all things, and in Him all things hold together. He is also head of the body, the church; and He is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, so that He Himself will come to have first place in everything. For it was the Father's good pleasure for all the fullness to dwell in Him, and through Him to reconcile all things to Himself, having made peace through the blood of His cross; through Him, I say, whether things on earth or things in heaven. Colossians 1:13-20

God, after He spoke long ago to the fathers in the prophets in many portions and in many ways, in these last days has spoken to us in His Son, whom He appointed heir of all things, through whom also He made the world. And He is the radiance of His glory and the exact representation of His nature, and upholds all things by the word of His power When He had made purification of sins, He sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high, having become as much better than the angels, as He has inherited a more excellent name than they. Hebrews 1:1-4

Born of Mary, virgin mother, by the power of the Spirit

Now the birth of Jesus Christ was as follows: when His mother Mary had been betrothed to Joseph, before they came together she was found to be with child by the Holy Spirit. And Joseph her husband, being a righteous man and not wanting to disgrace her, planned to send her away secretly. But when he had considered this, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream, saying, "Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary as your wife; for the Child who has been conceived in her is of the Holy Spirit. She will bear a Son; and you shall call His name Jesus, for He will save His people from their sins." Now all this took place to fulfill what was spoken by the Lord through the prophet: "BEHOLD, THE VIRGIN SHALL BE WITH CHILD AND SHALL BEAR A SON, AND THEY SHALL CALL HIS NAME IMMANUEL," which translated means, "GOD WITH US." Matthew 1:18-23

Made true man, our elder Brother

And the Word became flesh, and dwelt among us, and we saw His glory, glory as of the only begotten from the Father, full of grace and truth. John testified about Him and cried out, saying, "This was He of whom I said, 'He who comes after me has a higher rank than I, for He existed before me.'" For of His fullness we have all received, and grace upon grace. For the Law was given through Moses; grace and truth were realized through Jesus Christ. John 1:14-17

By common confession, great is the mystery of godliness:
He who was revealed in the flesh,
Was vindicated in the Spirit,
Seen by angels,
Proclaimed among the nations,
Believed on in the world,
Taken up in glory.
I Timothy 3:16

That the lost might life inherit

Then Jesus again spoke to them, saying, "I am the Light of the world; he who follows Me will not walk in the darkness, but will have the Light of life." John 8:12

Jesus said to him, "I am the way, and the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father but through Me." John 14:6

Jesus said to her, "I am the resurrection and the life; he who believes in Me will live even if he dies, and everyone who lives and believes in Me will never die." John 11:25-26

Therefore many other signs Jesus also performed in the presence of the disciples, which are not written in this book; but these have been written so that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God; and that believing you may have life in His name. John 20:30-31

For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord. Romans 6:23

Was crucified for sinful men

"For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life a ransom for many." Mark 10:45

But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us. Romans 5:8

And He Himself bore our sins in His body on the cross, so that we might die to sin and live to righteousness; for by His wounds you were healed.
I Peter 2:24

For Christ also died for sins once for all, the just for the unjust, so that He might bring us to God, having been put to death in the flesh, but made alive in the spirit; I Peter 3:18

And raised by God to life again!

But on the first day of the week, at early dawn, they came to the tomb bringing the spices which they had prepared. And they found the stone rolled away from the tomb, but when they entered, they did not find the body of the Lord Jesus. While they were perplexed about this, behold, two men suddenly stood near them in dazzling clothing; and as the women were terrified and bowed their faces to the ground, the men said to them, "Why do you seek the living One among the dead? He is not here, but He has risen! Remember how He spoke to you while He was still in Galilee, saying that the Son of Man must be delivered into the hands of sinful men, and be crucified, and the third day rise again." And they remembered His words, and returned from the tomb and reported all these things to the eleven and to all the rest. Luke 24:1-9

But you disowned the Holy and Righteous One and asked for a murderer to be granted to you, but put to death the Prince of life, the one whom God raised from the dead, a fact to which we are witnesses. Acts 3:14-15

And we preach to you the good news of the promise made to the fathers, that God has fulfilled this promise to our children in that He raised up Jesus, as it is also written in the second Psalm, 'YOU ARE MY SON; TODAY I HAVE BEGOTTEN YOU.' As for the fact that He raised Him up from the dead, no longer to return to decay, He has spoken in this way: 'I WILL GIVE YOU THE HOLY and SURE blessings OF DAVID.' Therefore He also says in another Psalm, 'YOU WILL NOT ALLOW YOUR HOLY ONE TO UNDERGO DECAY.' For David, after he had served the purpose of God in his own generation, fell asleep, and was laid among his fathers and underwent decay; but He whom God raised did not undergo decay. Acts 13:32-37

But if the Spirit of Him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, He who raised Christ Jesus from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through His Spirit who dwells in you. Romans 8:11

Now I make known to you, brethren, the gospel which I preached to you, which also you received, in which also you stand, by which also you are saved, if you hold fast the word which I preached to you, unless you believed in vain. For I delivered to you as of first importance what I also received, that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, and that He was buried, and that He was raised on the third day according to the Scriptures, and that He appeared to Cephas, then to the twelve. After that He appeared to more than five hundred brethren at one time, most of whom remain until now, but some have fallen asleep; then He appeared to James, then to all the apostles; and last of all, as to one untimely born, He appeared to me also. I Corinthians 15:1-8

We All Believe in One True God

I don't know about you, but I find it so affirming to read the Apostle's Creed. Although it's not read very often in my church, I think it's a good reminder of the "basics" of what we believe.

Here, Martin Luther has written his own version of a creed - the authoritative, formulated statement of the chief articles of Christian belief. Over the next few days, we'll look at each verse of this hymn and revisit the familiar scripture upon which this creed is based.

We all believe in one true God

But the LORD is the true God; He is the living God and the everlasting King. At His wrath the earth quakes, and the nations cannot endure His indignation. Jeremiah 10:10

'See now that I, I am He, And there is no god besides Me; It is I who put to death and give life; I have wounded and it is I who heal, and there is no one who can deliver from My hand.' Deut. 32:39

And may these words of mine, with which I have made supplication before the LORD, be near to the LORD our God day and night, that He may maintain the cause of His servant and the cause of His people Israel, as each day requires, so that all the peoples of the earth may know that the LORD is God; there is no one else. I Kings 8:59-60

"Remember the former things long past, for I am God, and there is no other; I am God, and there is no one like Me..." Isaiah 46:9

For there is one God, and one mediator also between God and men, the man Christ Jesus, who gave Himself as a ransom for all, the testimony given at the proper time. I Timothy 2:5-6

Who created earth and Heaven

In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. Genesis 1:1

Thus says God the LORD, Who created the heavens and stretched them out, Who spread out the earth and its offspring, Who gives breath to the people on it and spirit to those who walk in it. Isaiah 42:5

It is I who made the earth, and created man upon it. I stretched out the heavens with My hands and I ordained all their host. Isaiah 45:12

The Father, who to us in love hath the right of children given

See how great a love the Father has bestowed on us, that we would be called children of God; and such we are. I John 3:1

He both soul and body feedeth, all we need He doth provide us

The LORD is my shepherd, I shall not want. He makes me lie down in green pastures; He leads me beside quiet waters. He restores my soul; He guides me in the paths of righteousness for His name's sake. Psalm 23:1-3

And my God will supply all your needs according to His riches in glory in Christ Jesus. Philippians 4:19

He thro’ snares and perils leadeth, watching that no harm betide us

I will lift up my eyes to the mountains; from where shall my help come? My help comes from the LORD, Who made heaven and earth. He will not allow your foot to slip; He who keeps you will not slumber. Behold, He who keeps Israel will neither slumber nor sleep. The LORD is your keeper; the LORD is your shade on your right hand. The sun will not smite you by day, nor the moon by night. The LORD will protect you from all evil; He will keep your soul. The LORD will guard your going out and your coming in from this time forth and forever. Psalm 121

Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I fear no evil, for You are with me; Your rod and Your staff, they comfort me. Psalm 23:4

But the Lord is faithful, and He will strengthen and protect you from the evil one. II Thess. 3:3

He careth for us day and night

Therefore humble yourselves under the mighty hand of God, that He may exalt you at the proper time, casting all your anxiety on Him, because He cares for you. I Peter 5:6-7

Behold, He who keeps Israel will neither slumber nor sleep.
Psalm 121:4

The LORD was going before them in a pillar of cloud by day to lead them on the way, and in a pillar of fire by night to give them light, that they might travel by day and by night. He did not take away the pillar of cloud by day, nor the pillar of fire by night, from before the people. Exodus 13:21-22

All things are governed by His might

O LORD God of hosts, who is like You, O mighty LORD? Your faithfulness also surrounds You. Psalm 89:8

Behold, the Lord GOD will come with might, with His arm ruling for Him. Behold, His reward is with Him and His recompense before Him. Isaiah 40:10

He rules by His might forever; His eyes keep watch on the nations; Let not the rebellious exalt themselves. Psalm 66:7

Beloved, Let Us Love

And this commandment we have from Him, that the one who loves God should love his brother also. I John 4:21

I thought Valentine's Day would be a good time to reflect on what it means for us to love one another.

Beloved, if God so loved us, we also ought to love one another.
I John 4:11

God, through John's writing, has a lot to tell us on the subject about what it means to love one another, and why it is that we are to love one another. (Of course, elsewhere in the Bible we are directed plainly as well; there is just a lot of concentrated exhortation in 1 John that we will look at today.)

We love, because He first loved us. I John 4:19

God loved us first. Before we even came into being, He chose us. That amazing love poured into us by the Holy Spirit enables us to love others.

How do we know He loves us?

We know love by this, that He laid down His life for us; and we ought to lay down our lives for the brethren. I John 3:16

Our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ laid down His life for us. He humbly went to the cross to pay for our sin. In the same way, we are to lay down our lives for our brothers. It is unlikely that you or I will ever have the opportunity to literally lay down our life - we won't be called to die for another person. However, we are called to serve one another selflessly, which is what I believe John is asking us to do. Paul also instructs us in what it means to lay down our life in love for one another:

Do nothing from selfishness or empty conceit, but with humility of mind regard one another as more important than yourselves; do not merely look out for your own personal interests, but also for the interests of others. Philippians 2:3-4

It's very easy to read those words; but I can tell you from personal experience that it is very difficult to live them out. As sinners, we are born selfish. It is only possible through the help of the Holy Spirit and the sanctifying work of Christ to be transformed into someone who loves by putting others first. John also reminds us that love goes beyond words, and is practiced in works.

Little children, let us not love with word or with tongue, but in deed and truth. I John 3:18

It's easy to love with words. It's much more difficult to love in deed. But love is truly shown in how we treat each other, not in what we say. Our love for one another is a sign of who we are and Who we know. Our love for one another shows the world that we are His, and that we know Him.

Beloved, let us love one another, for love is from God; and everyone who loves is born of God and knows God. I John 4:7

I want to love in such a way that unbelievers come to know the love of God through His outpouring of love through me. Join me today in loving others because of what God has done for you.

Beloved, Let Us Love
Words by Horatius Bonar

Beloved, let us love: love is of God;
In God alone hath love its true abode.

Beloved, let us love: for they who love,
They only, are His sons, born from above.

Beloved, let us love: for love is rest,
And he who loveth not abides unblest.

Beloved, let us love: for love is light,
And he who loveth not dwelleth in night.

Beloved, let us love: for only thus
Shall we behold that God who loveth us.

He's Got the Whole World in His Hands

"The God who made the world and all things in it, since He is Lord of heaven and earth, does not dwell in temples made with hands; nor is He served by human hands, as though He needed anything, since He Himself gives to all people life and breath and all things; and He made from one man every nation of mankind to live on all the face of the earth, having determined their appointed times and the boundaries of their habitation, that they would seek God, if perhaps they might grope for Him and find Him, though He is not far from each one of us; for in Him we live and move and exist, as even some of your own poets have said, 'For we also are His children.'"
Acts 17:24-28

As I was thinking about the events in Egypt and the Middle East over the last several weeks, and thinking about all the nations that are in turmoil right now, this song weaved its way into my head: He's got the whole world in His hands.

The earth is the LORD'S, and all it contains, the world, and those who dwell in it. Psalm 24:1

God is not surprised by what is happening around the world today. And He is not wringing His hands over it. He remains on His throne, in absolute authority over the Earth.

The LORD has established His throne in the heavens, and His sovereignty rules over all. Psalm 103:19

We believe that God in His power and strength (and creativity!) made the world come into being.

By faith we understand that the worlds were prepared by the word of God, so that what is seen was not made out of things which are visible. Hebrews 11:3

That same Creator, still on His throne, is certainly in control of the world today.

The LORD reigns, He is clothed with majesty; the LORD has clothed and girded Himself with strength; indeed, the world is firmly established, it will not be moved. Psalm 93:1

Doesn't this give you comfort? I know it does me. We don't know what the future holds for these nations, or even our own, (or even ourselves!) but we do know Who holds it - right in His hands!

Someday, we don't know when, the trials and wars and conflict of this world will cease. Jesus will come again and a new heaven and new Earth will be created. The kingdom of the world will be the Kingdom of our Lord.

Then the seventh angel sounded; and there were loud voices in heaven, saying, "The kingdom of the world has become the kingdom of our Lord and of His Christ; and He will reign forever and ever." Revelation 11:15

And He will reign FOREVER and EVER. Hallelujah!

He's Got the Whole World in His Hands
Traditional Spiritual

He’s got the whole world in His hands,
He’s got the whole wide world in His hands,
He’s got the whole world in His hands,
He’s got the whole world in His hands.

He’s got wind and the rain in His hands,
He’s got wind and the rain in His hands,
He’s got the whole world in His hands.

He’s got the tiny little baby in His hands,
He’s got the tiny little baby in His hands,

The Wonder of it All

In this is love, not that we loved God, but that He loved us and sent His Son to be the propitiation for our sins. I John 4:10

Today is George Beverly Shea's 102nd birthday. Mr. Shea is well known for singing at Billy Graham crusades, and holds the record for singing in front of the most people at one time! He's probably best known for composing the music to one of my favorite gospel songs, I'd Rather Have Jesus.

He also wrote the words and music to this gospel song, which magnificently captures my feelings: the wonder of wonders that thrills my soul is the wonder that God loves me.

Have you spent time recently meditating on the love of God? His love is unfailing, deep, strong and true.

For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish, but have eternal life.
John 3:16

He loved us so much that He didn't wait for us to be good enough to deserve His love; on the contrary, while we were sinners, He demonstrated His love for us!

But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us. Romans 5:8

His love not only saves us, it makes us alive forevermore with Christ, raises us up with Him, and seats us with Him in the heavenly places!

But God, being rich in mercy, because of His great love with which He loved us, even when we were dead in our transgressions, made us alive together with Christ (by grace you have been saved), and raised us up with Him, and seated us with Him in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus, so that in the ages to come He might show the surpassing riches of His grace in kindness toward us in Christ Jesus. Ephesians 2:4-7

His love takes us away from darkness and into light; making us His children and giving us the hope of eternal life.

But when the kindness of God our Savior and His love for mankind appeared, He saved us, not on the basis of deeds which we have done in righteousness, but according to His mercy, by the washing of regeneration and renewing by the Holy Spirit, whom He poured out upon us richly through Jesus Christ our Savior, so that being justified by His grace we would be made heirs according to the hope of eternal life. Titus 3:4-7

It's a wonder that's only begun. I'm quite sure that once we're in heaven with our Savior, we will realize that here on Earth, we were only able to grasp a small understanding of His love for us. To fully comprehend it, that will be a wonder.

The Wonder of it All
Words by George Beverly Shea

There’s the wonder at sunset at evening
The wondrous sunrise I see
But the wonder of wonders that thrills my soul
Is the wonder that God loves me

Refrain
The wonder of it all
The wonder of it all
Just to think that God loves me
Oh the wonder of it all
The wonder of it all
Just to think that God loves me

There’s the wonder of spring time and harvest
The sky, the stars, the sun
But the wonder of wonders that thrills my soul
Is the wonder that’s only begun
